My Saturday started out with getting up at 6:45 to make it to Manahawkin for an Estate Sale that was to start at 8:00 am. Pretty normal for a Saturday for me. There are usually a bunch of people who hit the estate sales, looking for items or treasures.
What makes me crazy is the debacle that is created when someone doesn’t know what they’re doing. First, an Estate by the very word indicates in bargain hunting the contents of a home, normally it is an older person who has passed away or someone relocating to a nursing home.
As everyone stood there patiently waiting, 8:00 a.m. came by around 8:15 the individual doing the sale showed up and at first seemed surprised that there where people waiting. “Warning Sign Here” Then she couldn’t open the door, and told us all we would have to wait about 20 minutes for her to get the key. Half the line of people left at that point, which is what we should have done.
Nevertheless, as they say “Patience is a virtue.” So we waited, and waited and waited. Finally, someone came and opened the door, and no as you can probably already imagine it wasn’t what it was advertised as. It was like walking into an ad for Pier 1 and Broyhill Furniture, New, New, New.
Ever the optimistic we walked around and each room looked like it had been set up by House Beautiful for a full shoot. Nothing was marked, and basically only the furniture was for sale. That would not have been so bad if she did not have to call the homeowner to check for each price.
I wouldn't have minded if this wasn't the only one I was scheduled to go to that day. As we where leaving for the weekend later that morning.
Now you may be thinking, “So what. What’s the big deal?” Look at it this way, professionals who know how to price, and know what they are doing usually run Estate Sales. It would be like going to a lawyer to represent you and having them ask you what to say in court. Alternatively, like getting your hair cut at a salon and having the hairdresser hand you the scissors.
Do not assume you know what you are doing. Because when you screw up the whole world gets to see just how dump, you really are. She wasted a lot of people’s time who do this, both for fun and for a living. Bargain hunters can be the biggest pains in the butt, believe me I know, but they also do not waste your time when they find what they want. If you have a job to do get a professional, better to give them a percentage for doing the actual work then pretending you are going to and not doing it.
This is one of those times where common sense was a dirty word, in this persons thinking.
